Dublin International successfully defended its Irish Champion title by taking home victory vs. a very competitive UCD team. The college team played probably the best match of the season keeping the score close and the tension up for most of the game. A few mistakes permitted DI to open up a larger gap and secure the result, at which stage UCD gave space to all its players. The final score 33-23 gives honors to a truly skilful DI team, and over punish a bit a very competitive UCD team.

The Irish Olympic Handball Association (IOHA) announced the appointment of Lúcás Ó'Ceallacháin as General Manager of the IOHA.

Ó'Ceallacháin has over 10 years experience in the sports sector and recently completed his MSc in Sport and Exercise Management at UCD. In addition to his MSc he holds qualifications in Sports Psychology, Sports Journalism, Athlete Performance Pathways, Coaching and Strength and Conditioning.
A former rugby international with Kazakhstan, Ó'Ceallacháin has worked extensively with rugby in countries where rugby is a minority sport, including Kazakhstan, Russia and Finland.

We wish the best of luck to Lúcás, and look forward to work with him on future projects

Dublin International will defend its Irish Champion title in the Final match of the Senior league vs a surprising and very much deserving UCD team.
UCD secured key victories vs Astra during the league and Lughnasa in the semifinal, and are today the best team to challenge the current champions.

Dublin International HC vs University College Dublin OHC
Match will be played on Sunday the 8th of May at 2.30pm in the Loughlinstown Leisure Centre.

Last poll was asking about last year of handball. Answers indicated as 2010 was generally quite poor, showing how there is something wrong on how handball is managed in this country. It is true that handball in Ireland is a very small sport, with few and expensive venues available and no real interest outside the handball community. But because the community is so small, it should be easier to get everybody on board on a “all included” project. Instead the already small community got split in 2/3 smaller reality making overly difficult to organize any larger event.
The new poll ask the simple question should the IOHA address the root cause of this “clan culture” and work actively (and not via black mail as done presently) to bring together all the little and isolated Handball Community?

On the IOHA website appears a article that describe the IOHA Festival of handball a great success, in total harmony with the IOHA president view that “the IOHA board is more important than handball”. Surely from an organizational point of view the 3 days event went smoothly, giving the president plenty of chance to shake more important hands.. But from a handball point of view (played handball, the actual game) the even gave very different response.
Let’s look at ladies first. Ladies handball has been in free fall since 2008, when the IOHA board dismantled a perfectly working project with the Irish Selection team. “we have great plan for Irish ladies handball” was the motivation. But that statement is everything that followed. Astra HC worked hard to keep up the motivation and the standard of the games. But everything around was falling apart. Even the club directly controlled by the IOHA board have seen important losses, this club that was supposed to represent the future of ladies handball, can’t even field a team of 7 players. This declining reality came evident when Astra HC played Glasgow in the ladies event. The ladies teams that a bit more of one year ago brought shine to Irish handball with their performance in the EHF Challenge Cup, was easily defeated by the Scottish ladies. Over the last two years the IOHA failed or had no interested in organising a ladies league, and it was clear how the two seasons without playing competitive games had affected the entire Astra HC system, from players to coaches. Prospects for next year don’t look any better, with Astra HC still being the only club with a strong interest in developing ladies handball, but players have lost motivation, as nothing is really there for them to play for.
The National Men’s team is in a different space. Over the past 3-4 years a lot of money, time, resources have been invested on the Men’s teams. A new coaching staff was put together, with local and two European coaches. As often comes with a change in coaching the positive results came fast in the first year, driven by a radical change in mentality and improved fitness. But over the past 2 years the trend reversed and the limits of the coaching staff to provide further development are evident. The Board likes to shine the third place obtained in the Challenge trophy. Little relevance they give to the fact that the competition has drop in quality since it has been split in two by the EHF, and they seems not to consider that the team finds itself 15 goals behind Malta, and the most recent results put them behind Scotland as well. The team is young, sure, but the Far Oer players didn’t look any older, and the excuse of an older and more experienced Scottish side has been used for the past 11years. Where are the coaching staff limits? Despite one of the European coaches officially covers the role of head coach, the local counterpart is too influential in many key decisions. He brought within the national team his personal issue with local clubs, and left out young talents that disagreed with him. His influence is also clear on the layout of players on the pitch, copying his own club team layout and playing other players out of position. The “trials” sessions seems to be on invitation only, hence the local coach still keeps control. The German coaches haven’t seen any league match since they have been involved with Irish handball, no surprise they are and limited and easily controlled in their selection and too often put players out of position. Tactically the team showed little or no improvement, and often the wrong attach strategy is played vs the opposing defence, raising some question about the tactical awareness. Despite all this, this coaching staff is still the best thing that happened to the men’s team for the past 7 years. Some improvement can still be expected but personal and club level issues, should be left out of the national team giving to the coaches the possibility to work with the largest pool of players possible. Moreover the European coaching staff should get to know players better, by attending local matches and observe players how and where they play in their local club.

Was checking the EHF website and I saw the 2010 ranking for Club teams. I thought that too often the good work of the handball community passed un-noticed and unrecognised. Ireland left the bottom line of the EHF Club ranking thanks to Dublin International and Astra.
The Irish Handball family should be grateful to all these players for giving to Ireland a higher profile.
So, I would like to use this post to say THANK YOU to a few people that in my opinion did something important to develop and give high profile to Handball in Ireland.
I would like other people to join me and add comments and more THANK YOU to more people.
-Robert Hamm, Conall Collier, Olena Karpenko and Andres Eiriksson for re-organising the National Competition for Junior and schools. THANK YOU.
-Lauren Sweeney for attending the EHF Youth Coaches Seminar and put once again Ireland on the map of Europen Handball. THANK YOU.
-The Astra Ladies team for coming back from the EHF Challenge Cup with EHF ranking points that moved Ireland from the bottom of the ranking, leaving behind ENG and SCO and others. THANK YOU.
-The Dublin International Men's team for coming back from the EHF Challenge Cup with an hystoric win that boosted Ireland further up in the EHF ranking. THANK YOU. and Thank you for keeping an Irish Team in relevant EHF competitions for the 4th year in a row.

As announced in October 2010 the Irish Olympic Handball Association signed a development agreement with the European Handball Federation.
Alongside the Scottish Handball Association, the IOHA is amongst the 1st to benefit from this "Infrastructure Support Program".
The 1st step in this 3 year program is the recruitment of a General Manager for the Irish Olympic Handball Association.

Finally, with one month delay for the previous years, the Senior Leagues start again.
There will be 4 men's and 3 women's teams battling for the title of Irish champion.
Astra, Lughnasa, UCD have teams in both competition. Dublin International, after the very successful European performance, will defend its title of top Irish team in the men's competition only.

First match and first Trophy of the season.
On Sunday 31st of October UCD OHC and ASTRA HC will challenge each other for the Corn Chrothrom Féinne.
Matches are at 1.30 pm Men ; 3.30 pm Ladies in the UCD sport centre
For all those that do not speak Irish, Corn Chrothrom Féinne means Fair Play Cup.
This is the first edition of a trophy born to celebrate the unique link and friendship between the two Clubs.

The Irish Olympic Handball Association is hosting a Coaching Course later this month.

The Coaching Course which runs from the 23rd to the 25th of October will be delivered by the IOHA Technical Director Carsten Klavehn .

The cost of the 3 day course is €200 for IOHA registered coaches and players and €250 for non members.

Credits will be awarded to attendees should they wish to sit the IOHA Level 1 Coaching Course in 2011.

End of Summer handball - IHF videos and social night
On Thursday 2nd at 7pm in the UCD sport centre UCD Handball Club will host a meeting during which it will be shown an IHFs official video with the explanation of the new rules. After that the meeting will turn in a social event at the UCD Sport Bar.
Curiosity
Roberto Baggio, famous Italian football player and one of the world best football player ever, got recently nominated by the Italian Football Federation as president of the technical Sector. What shall be noted is that despite his world famous CV, Roberto had to attend a 3 weeks course and sustain examination on topic such as Football Technic and tactics, Coaching and training methodology, sport psycology, Sport medicine, and Sport administration. In contrast in Ireland people get put in executive places.....

With the finals of May 9th Dublin International SM and UCD SF were crowned Irish Champion 2009/2010.

Dublin International won a finals vs UCD that gave them the double title: Irish Champion and current holder of the Irish Perpetual Trophy.

UCD ladies overcome ASTRA in the final match and win their first Irish title after 4 finals in a row and become the Irish champions 2009/2010

Astra Handball Club is Organising a Coaching Forum on Sunday the 23rd of May in the UCD Sport Centre, from 2pm till 5 pm.

This Forum is open to everybody involved or wishing to be involved in coaching.
FORUM means a place where people meets and talks (FORUM is the Latin word for square). A chance to give everybody the possibility to express their feelings, ideas, extern problems, and put forward suggestions.

There will be discussions on the general status of technical and tactical development of players and coaches in Ireland, and try to come up with suggestions on where the focus and energy should be put for the next year and in the medium term.

A Forum as said before, not coaching course. An event where we all talk. The intent is to give as much support as possible to young coaches so they feel more supported, confident and focused.

Sunday 17th the men's league resumed with the match
Dublin International - Astra HC. DI won the match 34-27 vs an Astra team that never surrended despite DI had the match under control for the whole 60 min. To note the spectacular performance of the two referees and their table officials.

Here the schedule for the weekend 5th-6th December is.
*As far as I know DCU doesn't have a hall, so match will be re-scheduled.
**Also Lughnasa ladies have been removed from the schedule, So St.Pats' is free to schedule vs Meath if suit both team

Also, very likely a fifth team will join the senior men league. This team will take Lughnasa place in the schedule. Check this blog for updates.

Senior League started officially last weekend with the clash in the Ladies category between last year finalists, St.Pat’s and UCD.
St.Pat’s turn out to be the winner once more against a UCD team decimated by flu and injuries.
This weekend it is going to be the Men League to do its debut.

It is the privilege of the UCC Olympic Handball Club to inform you that the Cork Handball Tournament will take place on Saturday 5th December 2009 in the UCC Mardyke Arena, Western Rd,Cork, Ireland.
The format of the tournament will be based on a round-robin format, with the top two teams progressing to the final. The entry fee is €40 per team.
UCC Olympic Handball Club will be organising a party for the Saturday night (December 5th) somewhere in Cork City.

For a full week a team from SKG Rossdorf (Germany) stayed in Sligo during their autumn holidays. 15 boys in the age of 11 - 16 found a 'new home' during their stay with families of players of our club.
A program of great diversity was organised and it can be safely said there was no chance for the guests to be bored at any time.Summerhill College provided the opportunity for the handball players to get a sniff of gaelic football in a workshop specifically organised for them. A 'town treasure hunt' in Sligo made them familiar with the area (and the fact that nearly every person would know the melody of "oro se do beatha bhaille").

They took part in a tournament with secondary schools from Sligo, Ballisodare, Galway and Ros Muc. A family day provided opportunities for a range of activities in the wider surroundings of Sligo. Handball dominated the weekend when Astra (Terenure), Sligo and Rossdorf played club v club matches - and the U-17's got involved in a challenge match with the adults from Sligo and Rossdorf. Surfing in Strandhill was a particularly unique experience for the German boys whose home town is located near Frankfurt with the sea some 600 km away.

A day in the local schools with their hosts gave an impression of the differences in the school settings in Ireland and Germany. And last not least a small court jamboree in Collooney brought together all players from Sligo and Rossdorf for a wonderful 'farewell party' ... with incredible food supplied by parents of our club.

The entire week was extremely enjoyable for all involved. The feedback from the German boys and also from their six coaches/parents was overwhelmingly positive with a specific note on the hospitality on the side of the host families.Without the support of so many individuals in the club, all contributing within their own area and as good as they could, such an exchange program would be simply impossible.

Looking at it from another angle, where it is possible to provide such opportunities to our children (and ourselves) it is a demonstration of simple cooperation beyond the realms of profit and personal gains - and this in itself is worth probably hundreds of times more than any old trophy.

So: a great thanks to all parents, players, helpers, teachers, family members - who all contributed to make the exchange a huge success.

The month of October will see three Irish teams representing Ireland in three European competitions.
Ireland never had such a large representation in Europe.

Dublin International will play in the men's Challenge Cup in Siscia (CRO) on the 9-11 October week end

5th September '09 - Anglo-Irish Cup 2009. Great Dane wins the first edition of the Anglo-Irish Cup (35-32 final score). In a very intense match, with constant overtaking between the two sides, the current English champions managed to keep their coolness and win in the last few minute over the equally strong Dublin International team. Chris O'Reilly deserve a special mention. This young player, recently moved from North Kildare to DI, showed already to benefit from the summer training with DI's experienced players. We hope that this competition, born as an initiative of the Dublin International Club and with the support of the English Handball Association, will see continuation in the coming years. -DVD of the match is available on request.

30th August '09 - Astra Handball Club has a new web site. The site, still under construction, is accessible at the address http://www.astrahandball.com/

30th August '09 - International handball in Dublin, Anglo Irish Cup 2009 Dublin International are honoured to be the first host nation of the Anglo Irish Cup. The tournament, to be held in St Columba's College, Co Dublin on the 5th of September at 17.30 will hopefully be the first of many in years to come. The tournament showcases the National Champions from England and Ireland to play for the title "Best Club of England and Ireland". This years teams are, Dublin International, 2 time All Ireland National Champions, and Great Dane, 5 time National League Champions and 6 time Cup Champions of England. England Handball Federations General Secretary Stephen Jones has confirmed he will be attending the game after receiving an invitation from Dublin Internationals President Magnus Clarke. Dublin International would like to invite everyone to come and support the Irish team in this International tournament. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

30th August '09 - Dublin International men & Astra Handball ladies will be representing Irish handball in the EHF Club competition Challenge Cup. Dub Int is at its second experience while Astra is entering for the first time this prestigious competition. Thanks to this two teams Ireland mantains its presence on the European stage, where handball counts.

30th August '09 - Susanne & Silke have left the building. This summer has seen the departure from Ireland of Silke and Susanne. the two UCD players were important personality of the UCD and Ireland handball life. They contributed by playing, partying, baking cakes, and coaching. Silke and Susanne were the first two coaches of the re-etablished Girls U14 Irish team. Thanks to them DJK Budenheim travelled from Germany to Dublin with their U14 team, and the Senior Irish Ladies team travelled to Budenheim in a exchange/training collaboration project. With the and of their Irish adventure Irish handball exported a piece of its history. We wish them a lot of good luck, and we hope to see them soon......Athens may be!!

Basically this guy (good friend of mine) got three matches suspension for insulting the ref, walking toward them and only being stop by team mates. Hence he got sent off. He kept insulting the ref from the stands for the entire 2nd half. The team got fines €80 because let the players keep going with the insults.

Ah, this is good stuff, good handball!! Missing it a bit.....
I think I should publish more of this.....just to relax a bit....

Dear all, It is my privilege to inform you that the inaugural Cork Handball Tournamentshall commence on 29th/30th November 2008 in the UCC Mardyke Arena, Western Rd.,Cork, Ireland. It is located near UCC on the south-west side of the city. Andit will be played on a proper full size handball court!!!
The format of the tournament will be based on a round-robin format, with thetop two teams progressing to the final. The entry fee is 60 Euro per team.
It would be advisable that you stay in Cork on Friday night if your team arebad morning travellers as we have the hall on both days at 12.00h until 18.00h.

ALL,
before telling about the suspension of the senior league, let me remind you one important thing!

Two Clubs haven't registered anybody yet!! Lughnasa F and Dublin International have 0 (zero) players registered.
Let me stress one point. It is not only that I want a record of all players, but the IOHA insurance will cover only the registered players. Do not rely on last year registration as we have a seasonal membership, so last year membership is expired! If you are not registered for the season 2008/2009, you are not insured!! IOHA will not permit to any not-insured players to play in any IOHA competition. Most of you have access to the list of registered players on google documents.
Same apply to all junior players.

League suspension.
After the dark facts of the tri-nation (I wasn't there, I heard the two bells and only feeling I got is that it wasn't pleasant for anybody) the IOHA decided that players and all stakeolder must sign a code of conduct. Certain behaviours are not acceptable. IOHA understand that improvement must be achieved in many areas (such as refereeing/officials.) and will try to focus on these needs, but despite this, in a sport environment (expecially one with a small population like ours), unrespectful and violent behaviour is totally unjustified and not acceptable.
So, the board set up a working group which has the task to prepare the code of conduct that all IOHA members will be required to sign. Understanding that the league schedule preparation is full of limitations (hall availability and time) the working group will try to work on a resonable short timeframe and resume the league after Nov 8th.

The boys section of the Dublin Open Olympic handball championships took place in Inchicore VEC on Wed 12th December. In all seven schools were represented at the event. Tallaght CS, Ballinteer CS, St Tiernan's, Drimnagh Castle, Greenhills College, Coolmine CS and Eurocampus, Clonskeagh ( an amalgamation of the German and french schools) This was a knock out competition from the strat. There were no seedings and the luck of the draw was all that kept you away from some really good teams. The competition was divided into 3 sections 1st year, second year and 3rd/4th year. The idea was that young boys would be able to play with their own class mates as opposed to other sports whereby 1 day either side of a date can put you in another age bracket. The games were fast and furious as each team knew that a loss meant an early shower. Coolmine hedged their bets with two 1st year teams but only their A-squad came close to winning eventually losing on the tightest of margins to St Tiernan's who had un earthed a gem of a player in Hungarian Fazekus, his shooting was unstoppable. in the other first round matches Tallaght St kilian's and Drimnagh castle all progressed. In the semi finals Tallaght easily brushed aside St kilians due to some fantastic team play from seasoned handballers from Lughnasa HC and a new find in craig Palmer who has been signed up by the Tallaght club. unfortunately for St tiernan's although they came up against a relatively new team in Drimnagh castle the castle had an ace up their sleeve. Ireland u-14 goalkeeper darragh Hallows played a personal duel against Fazekus with the Irish keeper coming out on top and his team scoring at will against the St Tiernan's keeper. However in the final a team of seasoned handballers from tallaght CS easily swept aside the Castle to win at 1st year level again in Olympic handball. the school that brought us handball in 1973 is rising again. The second years competition was a fantastic affair. Almost all teams had members of the u-15 Irish squad and the duels on the court made for breath taking games. Greenhills easily swept aside St Tiernan's, castle easily beat Eurocampus. But the match between Ballinteer and Castle was the best match of the day. Speed, jump-shooting, full contact defending the game had everything. Luke Moran with 6 goals and Jason Germaine also with 6 were the stars of the game. At the end they shook hands but in truth this was a war of attrition. Castle had some Irish squad players after this game some of the Ballinteer boys will be asked to join. In truth this was the final and even though Tallaght beat Greenhills by the 1 goal they were annihilated in the final. In the final of the 4th years the boys of Eurocampus beat Coolmine in what was Coolmine's worst display of the season. They never really got going but that was in large part to Julien eberle and his team mates, they kept the pressure on Coolmine all the time and when they eventually thought to mark Julien out of the game his team mates rowed in with some great goals. If you ever wanted your schol to try a different sport this is the time to do it. Boys and girls from Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare have played each other in 5 major tournaments this year and the number is growing. With professional refs at each tournament there is no doubt that Olympic handball is on the up and schools are now deciding to "Create their own Tradition" After the new year St Joseph's Rush, Maryfield College, St Paul's, Presentation terenure will all be joining the competition along with schools from Kildare, Wicklow, Meath, Galway, Mayo and Sligo. The following Rules have been added to the 2007/2008 Competition Rules. These Rules shall be effective form 1st December 2007.

Rescheduling of a Match
And administrative fine will be applied to the responsible team for the re-scheduling of matches
- Basic fee is €20.
- And extra fine of €30 will be applied if the team asking to re-schedule is the away team. These €30 will be credited to the home team toward hall booking fees.

Transfer of Players

Fines
A fine of €10 will be applied to the home team if NO Table officials are present at the match.
A fine of €40 will be applied for missing referee commitment.
A fine 0f €20 and one match ban will be applied to player sanctioned with a red card (excluding 3X2min).
Semi-F. and Finalist team must pay all outstanding fees 10 days before the Semi-Finals.

2007/2008 Competition Rules have been sent out to all teams. These new rules are highlighted in bold characters.

As part of a Long Term Players Pevelopment Plan the IOHA entered an women's U20 team in the IHF U20 World Cup.
This is the first time Ireland participate in an IHF top competition.
Qualification matches for the final stage will be played in Iceland on March 21st-23rd 2008.
In the same group with Ireland and Iceland there is Romania, Serbia and Hungary.

The European Handball Federation has confirmed that the EHF Challenge Trophy (senior men's) is to take place in Luxembourg in October 2007.

Originally scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, the Luxembourg Handball Federation has stepped in to organise the event following the withdrawal of the Scottish Handball
Association.

Ireland , together with teams from Luxembourg, England, Scotland, Faroe Islands and Malta will take part in the week-long event and challenge for a place in the Challenge Trophy final, which is due to take place during the European Championship in Norway in January.The event is scheduled to take place 23rd to 28th October 2007 in Luxembourg.

Summer....not much happens...
Time to think about EHF tournaments. St.Pat's (M&F) and DIT (M) will play in the EHF Challenge Trophy.
Time to think about next season. The Competition commettee will meet on Sunday 24th of June to draw the competition calendar 2007/2008.
Time to enjoy handball in relax. Every Thursday in UCD at 8pm till 10pm...everybody is invited to play.
Time to....add stuff to this Blog. Check the new feature...the calendar on the right-side bar.
