October-Irish Handball goes to Europe

The month of October will see three Irish teams representing Ireland in three European competitions.
Ireland never had such a large representation in Europe.

Dublin International will play in the men's Challenge Cup in Siscia (CRO) on the 9-11 October week end

Astra HC senior ladies team have just returned from the round 2 of the EHF Challenge Cup. This group stage took place in Macedonia from 2nd - 4th October. Astra finished third (of 4 teams) in the group; this is a fantastic achievement of which the club goes proud as this was the very first time that a ladies Irish Handball team entered an European club competition. This was a real team effort where everybody played an important role: the Astra ladies worked hard for the last two months before the competition, the Astra club official focused on all the organisation aspect, smoothing down obstacles and overcoming any bureaucratic impediment, and the Astra coaching staff worked together taking care of the technical, physical and tactical aspect preparation. Astra HC is over satisfied with the player’s performance and is greatly gratified for the positive feedback received by the EHF observed who didn’t expect an Irish team to perform at this level at its debut on the European stage. WELL DONE LADIES.

yes ladies, has been a pleasure to work with you over the last 4 months. And also worked very well during the entire weekend. Thanks again.

It was a great weekend indeed and the ladies did well!
Congrats also from my side!
I was happy to see you all there - and thanks to the coaches for all their efforts, too!

it seems that St Pats men team still hold Irish record (wining one game in Europe).DI have unfortunately lost all of their three matches:(Better luck next time lads.

seems yes! if you don't count walkovers....which seems fair enough.

for St Pat's men victory in EHF, I think it's not only an irish record, but a UK record...cause if I'm right the english teams never won a simple game in Europe...

Not true actually. The UK team has beaten DIT the year before St.Pat's took revenge, as an Irish team vs the Brits. So in summary it seems that Irish and British team can only beat each other. So this leave Astra ladies being 1) the first Women irish team playing in Europe (at club level), and 2) the only Irish team "taking points" from a Continental team. any other "very interesting" stats to mention?

Hah, 53, Astra took the points from the Greek team - do you have any idea how much I have to suffer for that now ;-)?

well, it was more the greek that gave us the points then us taking them from the greek!! They can blame Alexandre not to clear on where he is from!!
